Ledger

01

Cut a ledger mark

Persisted play starts with a ledger mark. This guide uses a disposable name and secret; a real player should choose their own.

Type register guide-candle ash-before-dawn

LedgerCut a ledger mark
The book opens.
A blank pilgrim waits in the margin of the Ashen March.
> register guide-candle ash-before-dawn
guide-candle is recognized. No pilgrim is bound to this mark.
The Rite of Naming opens. The South Gate waits for a true name.
Inspect choices with race, class, background, or focus. Choose by writing the same word with a choice.
First, write name <name>. Example: name Saru Ash.

Rite

02

Name the pilgrim

The name is the first persisted truth. It must be a real, available character name before any world play begins.

Type name Guide Ember

RiteName the pilgrim
> name Guide Ember
Name sealed: Guide Ember.
Next, write race to see available bloodlines; then write race <name> to choose.

Rite

03

Choose a bloodline

Bloodline adds a small attribute lean. Humans are readable for a guide build because they are flexible and simple.

Type race human

RiteChoose a bloodline
> race human
Bloodline chosen: Human.
Restless, adaptable, and often underestimated by older bloodlines.
Modifiers: +1 charisma.
Next, write class to see available disciplines; then write class <name> to choose.

Rite

04

Choose a discipline

Ranger opens with a weapon, a cloak, and two practical early skills, so the guide can show sheets without a fragile build.

Type class ranger

RiteChoose a discipline
> class ranger
Discipline chosen: Ranger.
A pathfinder who treats terrain as an ally.
Primary stats: dexterity, wisdom.
Hit die d9, mana die d2
Starting skills: Measured Slash, Tracking.
Starting equipment: Rusted Sword, Ranger's Cloak.
Next, write background to see available origins; then write background <name> to choose.

Rite

05

Choose an origin

Origins add starting items and a little history. Debt Runner gives a ration and lantern, both useful first-pack examples.

Type background debt runner

RiteChoose an origin
> background debt runner
Origin chosen: Debt Runner.
You have carried messages, coins, threats, and once a hand in a jar.
Modifiers: +1 charisma.
Starting items: Field Ration, Worn Lantern.
Optional: write focus to see stat choices; write focus <stat> to choose; or write review to skip.

Rite

06

Add a stat focus

Focus is optional, but a visible +2 makes the review screen teach that creation choices affect real numbers.

Type focus dexterity

RiteAdd a stat focus
> focus dexterity
Stat emphasis chosen: dexterity (+2).
Write confirm to make the character real, or back to revise.

Rite

07

Review before sealing

Review is the last safe pause. It shows attributes, vitals, starting skills, and kit before the character is made real.

Type review

RiteReview before sealing
> review

Type confirm

RiteMake the character real
> confirm
[sheet] Guide Ember - Level 1 Human Ranger
Guide Ember is made real. The south gate waits.
When the dust settles, write look.
Other pilgrims walk the March - type help, or who all to see who's online.

First Room

09

Read the threshold

After creation, look is the most important habit. It names the room, describes it, and lists obvious exits and interactables.

Type look

First RoomSouth Gate Threshold
> look
South Gate Threshold
The first arch of the March leans inward, forcing every pilgrim to enter one at a time.
Dawn thins the ash-grey edges of the room. The air is clear for now, which only makes the distance feel more honest.
Newcomer Notice. Try: look newcomer / get newcomer notice
Exits: north, south

First Room

10

Inspect the newcomer notice

Named things in room text are usually inspectable. The notice points new players at help, who all, channels, parties, guilds, and mail.

Type look newcomer notice

First RoomSouth Gate Threshold
> look newcomer notice
Newcomer Notice
A soot-stamped notice beside the first arch reads: NORTH reaches the Gate Yard and Market Cross; WEST from the market finds Mirela and the First Ash account. Other pilgrims walk the March. Write HELP for the command atlas, WHO ALL for the online roll, GOSSIP for the open channel, PARTY for travelling company, GUILD for charters, or MAIL for letters.
common item. Try: look newcomer / get newcomer notice

Sheets

11

Check the pack

Inventory proves the character has real starting items, not a placeholder loadout.

Type inventory

SheetsSouth Gate Threshold
> inventory
[sheet] Guide Ember's pack - 3 carried groups

Sheets

12

Check equipped gear

Equipment shows what is already worn and how many slots are open for later progression.

Type equipment

SheetsSouth Gate Threshold
> equipment
[sheet] Guide Ember's loadout - 2 equipped / 13 open slots

Sheets

13

Check known skills

The skills sheet tells the player what they can use now and what trainers can eventually teach.

Type skills

SheetsSouth Gate Threshold
> skills
[sheet] Guide Ember's disciplines - 2 known / 0 eligible / 6 locked

Walk

14

Step north to the yard

Movement commands are plain directions. Each move returns a fresh room readout, so the player never needs a minimap to start.

Type north

WalkGate Yard
> north
Gate Yard
Wheel ruts, old chalk marks, and inspection posts make this yard feel busier than it is.
Dawn thins the ash-grey edges of the room. The air is clear for now, which only makes the distance feel more honest.
Gate Yard Signpost. Try: look gate / get gate yard signpost
Exits: south, west, east, north

Walk

15

Continue to the bridge

The early route stays safe while teaching that rooms are connected by authored exits, not menu buttons.

Type north

WalkSoot Bridge
> north
Soot Bridge
A stone bridge crosses a dry runoff channel that still smells faintly of rain and coal.
Dawn thins the ash-grey edges of the room. The air is clear for now, which only makes the distance feel more honest.
Exits: south, west, east, north

Walk

16

Turn toward the market

Branching directions matter immediately. West bends toward Mirela and the first quest.

Type west

WalkToll Steps
> west
Toll Steps
Shallow steps climb around a shuttered toll booth where brass nails catch stray light.
Dawn thins the ash-grey edges of the room. The air is clear for now, which only makes the distance feel more honest.
Exits: south, east, west, north

Walk

17

Reach Mirela's stall

Mirela is a merchant, banker, and quest giver. The room text advertises those affordances directly.

Type north

WalkMirela's Brass Stall
> north
Mirela's Brass Stall
Mirela's scales hang level despite the leaning stall, which is probably the point.
Dawn thins the ash-grey edges of the room. The air is clear for now, which only makes the distance feel more honest.
Mirela (vendor, quest giver). Try: look mirela / talk mirela / shop
Mirela's Ash Ledger keeps deposits here. Try: bank / deposit <amount|all> / withdraw <amount|all>
Exits: south, west, east, north

Quest

18

Accept First Ash

Talking to named NPCs is how dialogue and quests begin. First Ash is the opening obligation.

Type talk mirela

QuestMirela's Brass Stall
> talk mirela
Mirela
Coin is cleaner when counted twice.
The northern gate is closed because it remembers too much blood.
If you want the March to count you as more than smoke, start with First Ash. Black Orchard, grave ash, then the Crown Ruin's old oath.
Quest accepted: First Ash.
First Ash: Mirela wants proof that the March has accepted another fool into its ledger.
Read the Orchard - Mirela wants a witness before she trusts any bundle of ash.
[0/1] Reach the Black Orchard and learn why the trees do not burn.
Bring Grave Ash - Proof has weight, and Mirela counts weight better than promises.
[0/3] Bring back grave ash from the outer paths.
Break the Warden's Oath - The northern gate will not answer while its old keeper still stands.
[0/1] Break the Gate Warden's oath at the Crown Ruin.

Market

19
